AniBlog Tourney: Where OtakuEliminationGame Failed
Posted by Aorii in Random Rants, tags: Aniblog Tourney, Anime Blogging, Otaku Elimination Game
I was hardly the biggest fan when the Aniblog Tourney started. Successor to OEG? Those elitist channers. Popularity contest? There are easier and far more reliable ways to do this than E-PEEN stroking (what would one call the girls’ version?), like compiling individual blog’s pageviews, readership (feeds), comment density, etc. The fact I got rolled into it made me particularly uncomfortable: this was simply not the type of competition I enjoyed, especially if I have to face off against a friend on the first round.
But now that the tourney is on the road, I feel like the efforts of Scamp, mefloraine, and RP are actually coming off as very worthwhile. The haters have entrenched themselves far too deep in their own opinions to realize something: the Aniblog Tourney is doing what the OEG should have done — providing specified criticism that comes with constructive values. The gems… lay within the comments.
Don’t take it wrong Scamp, I’m not praising you. I’m only reading your blogs for research purposes on the other perspective alright? Research, that’s all.
How are the comments different from the OEG? Simple: the Aniblog Tourney itself doesn’t judge. There are no pre-established opinions with large red letters to argue for or against. When people aren’t too busy fighting fire with fire, we discover that we can still have a civilized discussion between humans. Wha— in my drama-laden aniblogosphere? There’s still hope for otaku yet.
Unlike OEG, which generalizes to the extreme and overloads their opinions with provocative words, Aniblog Tourney comments are far more precise and civil: I liked this, I didn’t like this particular writing style, the layout was schizophrenic, the banner was NSFW, this post was god-tier and decided my vote. What do you know, real comments that are actually useful? Ones that tell bloggers that these kind of posts should happen more and those types of wordiness may need adjusting? None of that HURR HURR YOU NOT OTAKU LIEK US trash.
Of course, many of the contestants in this tourney are seasoned anibloggers who have established styles, so I’m not quite sure how useful such feedback is. But for someone like me, who is not only new to the blogosphere but also still experimenting with different blogging methods and styles, Aniblog Tourney is positively a gold mine.
So bring it on! It doesn’t even matter whether or not I get knocked out first round. As long as I get some interesting comments anyhow. Although… I still don’t like this feeling of pressure (TTATT )
Hopefully, nothing will happen that’ll make me eat my words and turn Aniblog Tourney into the Watanagashi festival.

From what I’ve seen about the tourney so far, it’s all good. Constructive criticism will help people get better anyway.
And before I spark anything, I think I better get out of the scene! *runs away*
.-= Netto´s last blog ..Kojima Gives Awesome “Thank-You” Notes =-.
Just hoping it stays this way o/
But Netto, so unreliable =x
Why am I unreliable D:!
You run away so easily =x
Any dreams of a glittering Netto help defending his buddies were lost (*´ο‘*)=3
jkjk xD
Well, it’s true that I have not been accept in either OEG or the tourney, so I don’t really have much of a say there.
But still, constructive criticism given by the people who had voted are probably some of the best comments I’ve ever seen. I mean, some of them might sound harsh, but they certainly didn’t go to the extent of OEG shouting profanities/sarcasm everywhere!
Well said, I completely agree with your view.
As a new blog ourselves, the constructive criticism from certain people has helped me improve the site more, as well as help open doors for us in terms of new readership.
So far it’s been a success, considering that is what I was hoping to get out of it, whether I get knocked out early or not.
Glad you liked it o/
I guess there’s that whole “discovering blogs” business, although I haven’t gained anything from that yet xD
I dont really care about this tounament tbh.
You dont gain from it.
maybe more views, but i guess not.

I used to be more or less same case
The whole tourny aspect might be superfluous to its core goal, exposure.
Where’s the line between anti-tourny sentiment being knee-jerk reactions and criticism actually pointing to something useful? Not sure…the fact that the the tourny part of things is so LOL perhaps draws more attention to blogs than would simply discussing blogs in a meta fashion. It kind of defies all common sense, but this is the aniblogsphere.
Makes perfect sense to me, frankly. But then, I does not compute…
Drawing clear lines is unnecessary, I prefer my view in shades.
EXACTLY!!!!
Give them a game and they will gather!
.-= Scamp´s last blog ..No anime is dropped forever 36–40 =-.
That has been something I’ve been both shocked and delighted by. I was far more worried about people flaming in the comments than actually expecting constructive criticism. It’s been a great spin-off factor in this whole thing
.-= Scamp´s last blog ..No anime is dropped forever 36–40 =-.
Good spinoff factors: always welcomed o/
Yeah I originally thought it was just going to end up a OEG style flame war in the comments…
as a friend puts it… “lol high school popularity contest on the nets”
Tournaments make me paranoid x_x Well, to be particular, I don’t like being in contests wherein I’m in a group… I hate being the reason why we fail x_x If it’s individual, I don’t care. But H*P is a team blog so… aaaaaaaahhhhh!!! *finds a distraction.…. calms down*
Anywayz, I love the criticisms in the Tourney. I also hope that it does stay that way. I haven’t witnessed OEG though… so I can’t compare.
.-= Sapphire Pyro´s last blog ..K-ON!! — Episode 3 =-.
That’s definitely true. I forgot about the even-higher sense of pressure one gets from being enrolled in a team competition.
OEG was something I wish I didn’t witness. It causes my cynical side to grow =x
You know, this is a really really good post.
Not looking forward to our competition at all, as I’ll talk about Sunday morning. To me, it’s a lose-lose situation, I’ll be sad no matter the outcome.
.-= Janette´s last blog ..Aniblog Tourny Day 5 =-.
ah thanks o/, I uhh— was just assembling some thoughts.
haha, at this point we might as well just focus on the good parts and wish each other best of luck
\(^▽^*) (*^▽^)/
You two against each other hurts..I don’t know who to pick, myself. >.<
I will never tell. :P
I’ve been really surprised and enthused by the comments as well. I kind of wish people had criticized my blog more…XD Worst thing I could see is the lack of joy at my linking images to Pixiv, but I’m used to that anyway.
.-= mefloraine´s last blog ..To Aru Kagaku no Glow =-.
*hacks db to find out* xPPPP
I don’t see why they’d have a problem with that if they seriously cared for the art but [shrug]
I like what you said; the aniblog tourney does not judge. We, readers, do and that is an indicator of how civilized we all are. So far, we did good, I think

Reader-based discussions usually help to keep things more balanced, it seems o/
Being as busy as I am of late, I hadn’t taken time to notice all this drama over a fun tournament that hopefully gets people to check out other blogs other than the few they may frequent.
Technically bouncing around animenano already does that, and it’s what I do every so while to check out new blogs I havent seen before.
But I guess aniblog tourney forces you to take a deeper look to get an opinion.
