Otakon 2010 Anime Music Video Contest
Posted by Aorii in Anime, Local, tags: AMV, Anime Music Video, Otakon 2010One of my favorite events during any convention; even for Otakon where I had to wait an hour in line, but it was still well worth it~. So, in the spirit of sharing, I did my best in hunting down the videos in question but there are still some missing from this list >.< The ballot (here) won’t matter anymore though except as a reference.
And now a word from our sponsors by Scintilla (Contest 1st Place) [Download]
Anime: Various, but heavily Code Geass
Song: “Burger Dance (International Remix)” by DJ Otzi
Not surprisingly, this took first place in the AMV contest ~ the comedy section always did have the best stuff. I was literally laughing my tears our for minutes on this one, not to mention the inclusion of one scene that will never be unseen (~2:20, it’ll be thought of every time you see Hare Hare Yukai from now on xD).
Well anyhow, the rest comes in order of how much I liked their categories (the 1st and 2nd place marks are the official winners)… Keep in mind these are all finalists though and just about all of them are good >.<-b

Romance/Sentimental
“AMG in a Nutshell” is quite hilarious, but other than “Anything But”, I thought the Clannad and ef AMVs from the drama/serious category did a far better job as far as sentimentality goes. “Never Have Known” would have been good but… the pairing switch for much of the middle and sudden switch-back at the end really hurt it.

Upbeat/Dance
While Hare Hare Yukai AMVs are one of the most overdone things ever, “I Ain’t Marrin’ No Friggin’ Horse” is just outright amazing when it comes to timing/syncing. “Pacific Coast Party” contain every beach scene you ever needed to see and is quite funny (particularly 2:25). “Children of Daicon” sadly didn’t hit the tops; most might not get it but it’s an awesome Gainax tribute (name makes it pretty obvious) with clips from every series of theirs.

Drama/Serious
“Today, Forever” really hits the sentiments like a brick for anyone who loved Clannad. Personally I’m split between “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” — which has a lot of AMVs but VegettoEX’s is definitely the bet I’ve seen with their character choices — and ef’s “A Journey Through The Pages”.

Action
I don’t particularly care for this category, and my favorite was “Skin” which did great with Claymore’s drama factor.

I uploaded my Defying Gravity video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpDKQwxflfU It’s also on amv.org
lol thanks, *adds that to the list*
It was nicely done o/ although imo there was one too many sheryl-centric scenes for an AMV focused on AltoxRanka [shrug]
What I learned from watching these videos:
1. I desperately need and want to rewatch Lovely Complex
2. The Welcome to the N.H.K. one was nice but a little schizoid. I couldn’t quite tell the message of the AMV when it kept focusing on different girls. Should have just been about Misaki.
3. Watching the “Howl’s Moving Castle” AMV I realize I remember next to nothing about the movies plot. Except there is a funky moving castle.
4. “Nara” is just gorgeous. I’m a little rusty on my Ghibli-fu so I didn’t recognize everything. I was wondering if you know whether the paintings he used for the background are from anime or what. It’s hard to tell since Oro$hi mixes so many elements. I can’t tell what is original art and what is inserted. (except the characters) It’s absolutely gorgeous though. I’ve never seen anything like it in terms of integrating the paintings or background art and characters.
5. I am not ashamed to say that I couldn’t finish “Today, Forever”. I have shed enough tears over Nagisa.
6. The single version of “Defying Gravity” has it’s moments but some of the stuff that was retained from the Broadway version i.e. the unlimited bit, just don’t fit the pop single format.
7. I had forgotten how traumatic Teresa’s death in Claymore was. Talk about injustice.
This was a nice post. I don’t usually devote a lot of energy toward finding and watching AMVs but it is nice when someone points out the good ones to watch.
lol I still need to actually watch Lovely Complex (=x).
Totally agree with you on the NHK video… and I didn’t really get Nara until you said Ghibli-fu (xD).
Same here for finding/watching AMVs, there are wayyyy too many out there… hence I prefer to stay to the AMV contests where you know the stuff is good ;D
McDonalds McDonalds Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut McDonalds-…
God damn, that song will forever be stuck in my head.
Mikoto´s last post: Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakamatachi 06
Yeah, its gonna be stuck in your head for a while. It was stuck in my head throughout the entire trip home. The only thing that finally got it out was watching Gurren Lagann. And now I’ve got “row row fight the powah” stuck in my head.

Lol, didn’t stick in mine xP
Although Haruhi’s McDonalds sign cannot be unseen… xD
I’m glad you liked “Skin”! Unfortunately it seems that Claymore isn’t as widely watched as some other anime out there, so it didn’t resonate with the voters quite as much.
A shame. I thought the Claymore AMV was very good.
Mikoto´s last post: I will become a Megane soon enough
That’s probably true, same goes for quite a few of the other anime too (like ef). *shrug* what can you do, popularity is part of the thing I guess…
I never realized that all the symbolism in ef is very useful in making a music video.
extremely so… especially given ef’s “experimental” presentation style that heavily used eyecatches.
Oh man, watching AMVs brings we way back. ~2003 actually but feels like a lifetime ago. Thanks for sharing.
It’s one of the nice parts about AMVs, takes only a few minutes but sends the emotions/nostalgia of an entire series running through your head~
Thanks a lot for showing that, enjoyed the comedy ones ^w^
I dont want to be a doucher, but Britannia, [Expletive] Yeah! by @Productions won first place in comedy.
Oops backwards…
I totally knew that >.> <.<
